Why did the Russian-Germans leave Russia to go to Kansas during the 1870's?
I know that Catherine the Great encouraged Germans to immigrate to Russia during the 1760's, but why did the Russian-Germans leave Russia about a hundred years later?
Tsar Alexander closed the open-door policy on immigration from Germany, revoked special tax privileges for the Germans, and made them liable for military service - The latter point was what had drawn many Germans, especially the pacifist Mennonites, to Russia in the first place. Why Kansas area? (Along with North and South Dakota, Saskatchewan, etc.) Probably because the Great Plains areas greatly resembled the Russian steppes where they lived; as immigrant recruiters often pointed out.

Russians lead a life of interdependence
Most Russians live in small apartments in large buildings. The apartments are rare and generally is 2:58 generations living together.
Single people living with their parents and even married couples can live with their families because of the scarcity of apartments and economics of life through their own means one spouse is.
Family members trust each other. Grandma can take care of children and cook and clean for the family, while others work stoppage. You take care of each other.
Living in small apartments together, they must be considerate of each other and compromise to reach agreement.
It creates a climate of interdependence. The Russians are based at home together, while Westerners are more independent.
Because of their desire for interdependence, Russian women are women Excel.
The Russians are wonderful hosts and very warm when you visit them at home. You almost suffocated with attention when you a guest or a member of their family.
But they have almost two modes in their daily lives. It is the friend of the family / and the second is on the public.
At the government level, they stand and stone not to smile. They are generally not very user friendly and can be downright rude. In Russia, you will not get a smile sentimental in the bank, followed by a "Have a nice day" as you would in America.
If you stop a stranger on the street or an airport in Russia, you can not have no reaction whatsoever. They can continue to walk, let alone you. Asking for help can be a very frustrating in Russia.
The Russians are simple and straightforward. Life is hard. They do not waste time with joy and gratitude. They say what's on their minds in a way that leaves no room for misunderstandings.
The morale was seen as a part of the capitalist bourgeois society the Soviet era. The morale is increasingly seen as a way to perpetuate the old social order, as a religion.
